1 Corinthians 9 Bible Study: What Are You Willing to Give Up for the Gospel?

This 1 Corinthians 9 Bible Study begins with a question that confronts nearly every Christian: What are you willing to give up so someone else can know Christ?

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The United States Declaration of Independence

Here in the United States, we are obsessed with our rights.

We have the right to our opinions.
The right to eat what we want when we want.

The right to prompt and courteous service.
The right to spend our time however we choose.

If any of our rights are violated, we get angry. We file complaints or post unfavorable reviews. We change jobs. We may move somewhere else. And if we are really offended, we can sue the offender.

In 1 Corinthians 9, Paul challenges this mindset head-on. He’s not arguing that we don’t have certain “unalienable rights.” Rather, his point is: Which is more important: your right or someone else’s salvation?

This chapter isn’t teaching Christians to become people pleasers. It’s not recommending that we follow the crowd in an attempt to win people to the gospel. It does not counsel us to compromise biblical truth to make others comfortable.

Instead, Paul introduces a radically different question: When does love for others call us to surrender one of our rights in order to lead someone else toward a relationship with Christ?

In chapter 8, Paul argued that knowledge alone isn’t enough. Love must govern how we choose to exercise our freedom.

In chapter 9, he doesn’t simply explain that principle—he demonstrates it. He uses his own life to illustrate it.
